This is not happening. This can’t be happening, Jo thought. But it was happening, Jo knew that. Blood rushed to her face, and for the first time in the past 30 seconds of silence, she was glad that her face was covered. Just her torso wasn’t. Oops, Jo thought.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I should’ve knocked. Umm, sorry” James stumbled to say.

“It’s fine, honest. Just erm, never mind” Jo replied.

“No please anything. I feel terrible” James pleaded, trying to find a place on the wall to focus on.

“Erm, will you help me, you know with my shirt”

“Of course, sure”

Jo heard James walking over to her. She could tell that he hesitated as his footsteps slowed at one point. Then Jo heard a rustling. He was gently pulling her shirt over her head. Soon she could see, and she saw his face.

His face. He looked like he had been carved by angels. The pale milky skin with his floppy brown hair. So dreamy, Jo thought. James wasn’t just Jo’s best friend; she was also madly in love with him. He just didn’t know it and Jo didn’t plan on telling him. So out of my league, she thought.

With her top securely covering her now she blushed again.

“Erm thanks” She mumbled.

“Anytime” James replied.

Jo glanced up at him to see the rose colour of his cheeks. Is he embarrassed just as much as me? Jo thought. Then he caught her eye. They both stood there waiting a while until Phil broke the silence.

“Erm, yeah you two coming or not?”

Jo’s mind clicked and although she didn’t want to she found herself tearing her eyes away from James’ to glare at Phil.
“Yes. Now go!” she exclaimed.

Jo had already had enough of Phil for one morning, now she had to drive him to High school too. She looked back at James and gave him a silent thank you. She knew he’d understand it.

The drive there felt awkward. James said nothing and stared blankly at Jo as if he was trying to figure something out. It unnerved Jo a little but Phil soon ended that with his useless babble.

“Yeah this guy at school said that if you chop a worm in half, two grow! Cool huh?” Phil said.

“Umm” Jo mumbled.

“Oh oh, and this other guy said that if you put mentos in coke it’ll explode! Do you think that’s the same as pink lemonade and waln-“

“Nobody cares Phil!” Jo exclaimed.

That’ll shut him up, Jo thought, babbling on about rubbish.

Jo was still aware of James staring at her when Phil got out the car. She wasn’t sure if it was a good reason or a bad reason. Maybe he’s still embarrassed. Maybe he’s thinking of how to have dealt with it better. Whatever it was, it was putting her off her driving.

Just as she felt like she was going to lose control of her wheel, he spoke.

“Pull over Jo” James said.

There was some authority behind it. Without thinking Jo was already doing it. Maybe it was because James had said it and that she’d do anything for him. Maybe it was just exactly what she wanted to do in the first place. She didn’t know but she was already pulling up near the kerb.

“Jo, I need to tell you something.”

James said. Oh no he’s going to say he doesn’t want to be my best friend anymore, Jo thought. Tears brimmed in her eyes. A lump grew in her throat and she couldn’t swallow.

Don’t do this
, Jo thought, I love you.

“Get out!” Jo shouted, as she caught her brother, Phil, in the middle of the act of rooting through her diary.

Nosey idiot
, Jo thought, always invading my privacy. Jo knew that the only way to keep him out would be to get a lock for her room, as Phil had already found a way to pick the tiny, fragile lock on her diary. Jo had already brought this up one night at dinner and the only reaction she got off her Mum was a slight sigh.

“Well what is it that you must hide in there Josephine?” her Dad had asked after her mother gave her usual sigh.

There wasn’t much else her mother wanted to say. She always was a quiet woman for as long as Jo had been able to remember. Also the fact that Grandma had just passed away didn’t help. Mum was ever so fragile.

“Well?” Jo’s Dad asked again, his impatience growing.

Jo had forgotten that her Dad had asked her a question that she was supposed to answer. He often asked her those rhetorical questions that Dads normally ask like “who do you think you’re talking to missy?” and the classic “do you know what I did in my day for fun?” So many times Jo had wanted to give him a sarcastic quip about how he grew up in the Stone Age and played with sticks and stones, but she bit her tongue.

Jo then realised she still hadn’t answered her Dads pressing question.

“Nothing, I just wish to have a place where I can go and trust to know won’t be intruded”.

With that last word she shot Phil a glacier look, which she knew if he looked directly into, would send chills through his very bones. Jo knew Phil was scared of her. That’s what must make it more fun for him, Jo thought. The terror of being in trouble with Jo must of given him an adrenaline rush or something. Why else would he want to cross Jo’s path. Jo might be small and have pixie like features, but she knew how to pack a punch. That’s why she never understood why her idiotic brother liked to chorve her if all it got him was a beating.

The rest of the dinner was quiet. Her Dad didn’t try to argue about her having privacy anymore but there was definitely an answer for Jo’s query about the lock. A solid no.

A car horn sounded, waking Jo from her memory. That would be James.

Panic set in Jo’s mind. She wasn’t ready for college. She still had her pyjamas on, the pink dainty ones her Mum bought without consulting with her first. Jo knew that she couldn’t let James see her in that kind of clothing, especially not something pink.
Jo’s image was something more of the plain Jane type. But then she never needed to wear something spectacular, she would look dazzling in a pair of skinny jeans and a white tee. Jo had short, black, pixie like hair, to match her elfin frame. She looked like any other pretty college girl except for her eyes.

Jo never really understood where the colour came from. It was almost a silvery violet. Her Mum had said she had inherited them from her lately deceased grandmother. Jo didn’t know much about her mother’s part of the family. Mums quite a closed book, Jo thought. Another thing Jo had noticed about her eyes where that nobody ever really dared to ask her about the unusual colouring. She could see people pondering and trying to figure out if they’re contacts of some kind, but no one had ever questioned her about it.

Jo grabbed her dark blue skinny jeans and pulled them up her legs as fast as her tiny body could manage. With a little jump she had them up and fastened in no time. All that was left was the top. Now we’re that grey vest again? Jo thought, I saw it here somewhere.

Jo’s room wasn’t the tidiest at the moment. She had been trying to find her favourite necklace already that morning. It didn’t help that her brother had turned it upside down in the process of trying to find her diary.

“Urghh!” Jo sighed, “James will be heading up the drive way any min-“

Ding dong! Times up, Jo thought, one last chance to find this stupid vest. Jo rummaged under her bed. Wait what’s that, Jo thought, there’s something there. Something grey! Jo reached under her bed and yanked at the grey material.

“Please let this be it” Jo whispered.

Thump, thump, thump. That’s James coming up the stairs. She knew any minute he’d walk in the door and find her half dressed in a bright purple bra. Jo blushed at the thought and yanked harder at the cloth. It came loose. She crawled up of the floor and tried to pull the stretchy material over her head. It got stuck on her elbow and it wouldn’t go over her head.

Just then she heard a click.

“Jo?” a muffled voice came from through the shirt. It was James.
